A Strong Foundation: Samuel & Pennie Barfield
Our family story begins with Samuel Barfield, born in April 1861 in Pollocksville, North Carolina, just a few years before the end of the Civil War. He grew up during a time of incredible transformation in American history, and through hard work, determination, and love, he helped lay the foundation for the family we know today.
On December 28, 1882, Samuel married Pennie Bryant in Trenton, North Carolina. Pennie Bryant - Barfield was born in February 1860 in Trenton, North Carolina. Together, they raised nine children over 18 years, building not only a home but a legacy of resilience, family, and faith. She died on March 29, 1912, in Trenton, North Carolina, at the age of 52. Samuel passed away on February 27, 1929, in Trenton at the age of 67, leaving behind a proud lineage and enduring values that still guide us.
The FOY Connection
When David Barfield was born in 1902 in Jones, North Carolina, his father, Samuel, was 41 and his mother, Pennie, was 42. He married Julia Caroline FOY on February 12, 1924. Julia Caroline FOY was born on May 2, 1903, in Jones, North Carolina. They had five children in 16 years. He died on May 25, 1989, in New Bern, North Carolina, at the age of 87.She died on November 25, 1991, in New Bern, North Carolina, at the age of 88.
The Merritt Connection
Lena Estelle Merritt Robinson was born May 12, 1900 Kinston, Lenoir County, North Carolina and was the daughter of Leonidus D Merritt and Agnes G. Merritt. She married Clyde Franklin ROBINSON on January 19, 1918, in Wake, North Carolina. They had six children in 15 years. She died on May 11, 1979, in Kinston, North Carolina, at the age of 78.
The Robinson Connection
When Usher Barfield was born in 1925 in Trenton North, Tennessee, his father, David Barfield, was 23 and his mother, Julia Foy, was 22. He married Agnes Robinson on September 10, 1949, in Jones, North Carolina. They had nine children during their marriage. Usher died on March 30, 1999, in Trenton, North Carolina, at the age of 74.
